Waikiki: an Empty Landscape

It’s crazy to think that so much as changed just in the last 30 days. In the first couple weeks of March, the tourism world was business as usual. This started changing quickly as the “stay at home” order went into effect on the 18th of March. The streets, parks and beaches that were once heavily populated with tourists in Waikiki are nearly completely empty. As I was bike riding through the streets, an almost apocalyptic feeling was present. It’s something that I didn’t think I’d ever feel here in Waikiki.

You do still see some locals and tourists on the beaches here in Waikiki but police are becoming more strict in enforcing the “stay at home” order.   This order is currently in effect till 30 April¹.  It will be interesting what the travel numbers look like from the Hawaii Tourism board. https://dbedt.hawaii.gov/visitor/tourism/
